The Department of Education’s BER projects (Building the Education Revolution) aimed to provide new and refurbished infrastructure to all eligible Australian schools as a response to the Global Financial Crisis. Forming part of that program, the Sacred Heart College Media Centre is not just a new building, but a reimagining of what a primary school’s library can be. Luttrell Pyefinch saw this building as an opportunity to stray from the traditional standalone library typology and design a learning hub, with a vast, double-height space, book stock and administration contained to one side, and flexible learning and hangout space throughout the rest. Material selection was primarily natural and selected for optimal acoustic performance, allowing the quiet from a traditional library to be maintained. Material patterning is playfully based on a game of tetris and colours in the glazing are a loose reference to the stained glass window of a church.
